Best to wear loose clothing such as shorts or tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt. Please also bring some water with you. Once you have joined our academy and are training regularly, you are required to wear an HJJA kimono, which can be purchased from our online shop.
Yes, there are changing rooms available next to our hall, with separate men’s and women’s sections.
We cater for complete beginners in all of our classes, so you are welcome to attend any of them. However, our Wednesday class focuses entirely on the basics and is designed specifically for beginners.
No. Coaches will not ask you to spar until you have at least 8–10 classes under your belt. Even then, you will spar with a more experienced practitioner who will guide you through the movements, focusing on correct technique and defence.
Yes, we encourage our students to compete, but it is not compulsory. We have many high-level practitioners who have never competed, as well as white belts who compete regularly. If you decide to compete, you will be expected to prepare correctly and train hard in preparation.
We recommend attending at least 2–3 classes per week if you want to see quicker progression. The more mat time you get, the faster your skills will improve. Attendance is not compulsory at every class; you can pick and choose sessions that suit your schedule.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a marathon, not a sprint. Most black belts agree you should seek knowledge before the belt, and the ranks will come naturally. A typical timeframe for a consistent practitioner is 8–10 years.
